MILES DAVIS

Definitive Discography

Birth Of The Cool.............1949...........Capitol Records

Miles' first collaboration with Gil Evans.  It features his innovative nine-piece group.

Cookin'.......................1956..........Prestige Records

One of four albums recorded in two marathon sessions to complete Miles' contract with Prestige Records.  It features his first “classic quintet.”

Miles Ahead...................1957..........Columbia Records

Miles' second album with Gil Evans.  Miles plays the darker sounding flugelhorn, backed by a modified big band set-up.

Milestones....................1958..........Columbia Records

The first recording by the Miles Davis Sextet.  The title track is Miles' first modal composition.

Kind Of Blue..................1959..........Columbia Records

Considered Miles' masterpiece, this album is mostly modal in style and features the sextet.

E.S.P.........................1965..........Columbia Records

The first recording of Miles' second “classic quintet.”  The music is much more frantic than Miles' previous works.  The band no longer sticks to strict chord sequences but, instead, constantly shift the music as they feel it.

Miles Smiles..................1966..........Columbia Records

The second album with the second “classic quintet” and probably their best.  The band communicates on an almost telepathic level.

Bitches Brew..................1969..........Columbia Records

This album brought Miles into the eyes of many jazz fans.  It features lots of electric instruments.  The rhythms are funky and mysterious.  Often considered Miles' best fusion album.

On The Corner.................1972..........Columbia Records

Much in the same vein as Bitches Brew, this album features great group improvisation over funky bass lines and drum beats.
