MILES DAVIS

Stage Presence

Miles was known for his quiet, mysterious style both on and off stage.  His often seemed to disregard the audience's existence.  He was known often turn his back to the audience and often left the stage when he wasn't playing. Also, around 1954 Miles quit making announcements from the stage.

“I stopped talking to the audience because they weren't coming to hear me speak but to hear the music I was playing.” - Miles Davis

“That's the first time [since I'd been in the band] that I saw him go to the mic and say anything about anything to anybody.” - Jimmy Cobb on when John Coltrane left the band

“Miles Davis is my definition of cool.  I loved to see him in the small clubs playing his solo, turn his back to the crowd, put down his horn and walk off the stage, let the band keep playing, and then come back and play a few notes at the end.” - Bob Dylan
